Managing Pet Shedding Cycles

Fall Shedding: How to Keep Pet Hair off Your Autumn Blankets
As the days grow shorter in September, our pets experience a natural biological trigger. To prepare for the cold winter ahead, dogs and cats begin dropping their lightweight summer coats to make room for a thick, insulating undercoat.
For pet owners, this transition means one thing: hair everywhere. Suddenly, your cozy autumn blankets, velvet throw pillows, and fabric sofas look like they are growing fur of their own. If you are struggling to keep up with the autumn shedding cycle, use these professional cleaning tips to reclaim your furniture and keep your home fresh.
1. The Dynamic Duo: Rubber Squeegees and Microfiber
Vacuums are great, but they often glide right over pet hair that is woven
deeply into furniture fabric.
● The Trick: Grab a clean window squeegee with a rubber blade and drag it firmly across your sofa or fabric chairs. The rubber creates static electricity that pulls embedded pet fur right out of the cushions, gathering it into neat piles that you can easily pick up.
2. Wash Blankets on the Right Cycle
Tossing hair-covered blankets straight into the washing machine can
actually clog your plumbing and mat the fur deeper into the fabric fibers.
● The Trick: Put your dry blankets into the clothes dryer on a "fluff" or "no heat" cycle for 10 minutes before washing them. Add a dryer sheet. The movement and static control will loosen the hair and pull it into the lint trap. Clean the lint trap, then wash the blankets as normal.
3. Spray Static Guard on Soft Furnishings
Pet hair clings to blankets and rugs because of static charge. If you break
the static bond, the hair is much easier to vacuum up.
● The Trick: Lightly mist your rugs and fabric couches with a mixture of water and a few drops of liquid fabric softener. Let it dry completely. This relaxes the fibers and prevents pet hair from sticking tightly to the surfaces.
4. Upgrade Your Vacuum Routine
During peak shedding season in September, standard vacuuming isn't quite enough.
● The Trick: Slow down. Move your vacuum upholstery attachment in opposite directions across your furniture to catch hair trapped at different angles. Be sure to check and clean your vacuum's brush roll frequently, as wrapped pet hair reduces suction power.
