Post-Summer Reset: How to Clear Out Summer Sand, Dirt, and Chlorine

The sun is setting on summer, and autumn routines are just around the corner. While your family likely made incredible memories over the last few months, your home probably paid the price. Between beach trips, pool days, and backyard barbecues, late August leaves  our houses full of hidden summer messes. Traces of sand, ground-in dirt, and sticky chlorine residue have a way of lingering in every corner.

Before you swap your flip-flops for sweaters, it is time for a post-summer deep clean. Use this simple checklist to refresh your space and start the new season with a clean slate.

1. Deep Vacuum and Wash the Carpets tracked-in sand and dirt act like sandpaper on carpet fibers, wearing them down over time.

● The Fix: Vacuum every room slowly, going over high-traffic areas in multiple directions to pull up deep grit. For a true reset, use a carpet shampooer or hire a professional service to remove embedded dirt and summer allergens.

2. Wipe Down Windows and Patio Doors

Summer means constant traffic through patio doors and open windows that let in pollen and dust. Smudged fingerprints from sunscreen and popsicles can make glass look dull.

● The Fix: Mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Wipe down the glass with a microfiber cloth for a streak-free shine. Don't forget to vacuum the window tracks, which are likely filled with bugs and dust.

3. De-Chlorinate and Refresh Bathrooms

Wet swimsuits and damp beach towels often spend the summer hanging on bathroom hooks or tossed in corners. This traps chlorine, salt water, and moisture, leading to mildew smells and stubborn soap scum.

● The Fix: Wash all bathroom bath mats and fabric shower curtains on a hot cycle. Scrub shower walls with a mixture of dish soap and vinegar to cut through heavy residue, and leave the bathroom fan running to pull out lingering moisture.

4. Sanitize Outdoor Gear and Bins

Before you pack away the pool noodles, beach bags, and outdoor toy bins for the winter, they need a thorough cleaning. Storing dirty items invites mold growth during the colder months.

● The Fix: Hose down plastic toys and bins in the yard. Spray them with a disinfectant cleaner, wipe them clean, and let them dry

completely in the sun before bringing them indoors or storing them in the garage.

5. Refresh High-Traffic Entryways

Your entryway or mudroom bore the brunt of summer's chaos. It is time to clear out the clutter.

● The Fix: Move out all summer footwear and shake out the doormats. Clean the baseboards and sanitize the door handles.

Swap out the summer gear for school bags and fall jackets so you are ready for the busy weeks ahead.
